Empowering the Blind Workforce and Inspiring Change in Texas

VICTORIA, Texas — Ursula Odom, a dedicated worker in the Older Individuals who are Blind (OIB) program, is making a significant impact on the workforce in Texas. As an advocate for Vocational Rehabilitation Services, Odom’s mission is clear: to empower individuals who are blind or visually impaired to thrive in their professional lives.

“I understand firsthand the challenges of navigating life with blindness,” Odom shared. “That’s what fuels my passion for helping others in similar situations.”

Odom’s commitment stems from her personal journey. She began losing her sight several years ago, a life-altering experience that reshaped her perspective. Instead of allowing her disability to hold her back, Odom channeled her energy into advocacy and mentorship, ensuring others with vision impairments have the tools and opportunities to succeed.

Her work as an OIB worker requires not only focus but also creativity. Odom demonstrates how technology, such as the Seeing AI app, and adaptive tools can transform everyday tasks into achievable goals. Whether it’s identifying objects or navigating new environments, these resources are invaluable to her and the people she supports.

Odom’s dedication is evident at events organized by Vocational Rehabilitation Services, including the annual White Cane Day. These events, which celebrate the achievements of individuals who are blind, also raise awareness about the importance of accessibility and inclusion. Last fall’s White Cane Day in Victoria drew a diverse crowd, and the community can look forward to another inspiring celebration this year.

For Odom, her work is more than a job; it’s a calling. By sharing her story and advocating for resources, she’s helping to change perceptions about blindness and proving that disability is not a barrier to productivity or success.

“Everyone has something to contribute,” Odom said. “It’s just a matter of finding the right tools and support.”
