Fire breaks out at shuttered motel in Mesquite

Fire broke out Saturday at a vacant motel along a stretch of highway in Mesquite.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at the Tejas Motel on U.S. 80 Saturday afternoon, Mesquite fire department Captain Travis Block told The Dallas Morning News. No injuries were reported.

Photographs and videos posted to social media showed a thick cloud of black smoke blanketing the air by the highway. The cause of the blaze is not yet known.

The motel opened in 1970, offering low-cost lodging for decades. It closed about five years ago after the city of Mesquite implemented zoning changes intended to crack down on the city’s motels, many of them off Highway 80.

This is the second major fire in two days in North Texas. On Friday, a four-alarm fire tore through First Baptist Dallas in downtown Dallas.
