PHILADELPHIA – Texas A&M’s Kennady Fontenot broke the 3,000m steeplechase school record on the opening day of the Penn Relays Thursday at Franklin Field.
Fontenot highlighted the first day of the Penn Relays for the Aggies, as she broke the school record which was previously held by Texas A&M great, now coach, Julia Abell.
The sophomore crossed the finish line in 10:06.06 for fifth place and downed the former record by over seven seconds. Fontenot now ranks in the top-25 in the country for the event and fifth in the SEC.
Avery Perkins opened the day for the Maroon & White with a personal-best showing in the 1500m. The freshman crossed the line in 4:28.09 which lands her at No. 11 on the A&M all-time performers list. Ondrej Gajdos followed up in the men’s event with a career-best performance, bringing it home in 3:45.03 which was good for No. 12 in Aggie history.
Jonathan Chung and Jack Johnston secured a pair of personal-best showings in the final event of the day, as they finished the 5,000m in 14:08.97 and 14:20.31, respectively.
The Aggies return to competition tomorrow at the Penn Relays, while events also begin in Lubbock at the Corky/Crofoot Shootout.
