Former Overton city clerk arrested, accused of using city funds to purchase fuel

OVERTON, Texas — A former East Texas city secretary and municipal court clerk is in jail after using city fuel funds for personal use.

According to the Overton Police Department, officers were notified of a theft involving unauthorized fuel charges made on a city fuel credit card. An investigation conducted by Chief Bryan Pool found probable cause to believe that former City Secretary and Municipal Court Clerk Katherine McCandless, while employed by the city of Overton, used a fuel card intended for city officials for personal use.

Pool said from June 5, 2024 to Aug. 9, 2024, a total of 20 unauthorized fuel charges were made by McCandless, costing the city of Overton $1,192.64.

A felony warrant was issued for McCandless arrests on the charges of theft of property, which was enhanced to a state jail felony. McCandless was arrested on Sept. 17.

“The employees of this city strive to be good stewards of your tax dollars; any theft of your tax dollars will not be overlooked, condoned, or tolerated,” Pool said.
