Fort Worth approves new development, marking end for Montgomery Street Antique Mall

In a unanimous vote, city council cleared the way for two industrial plots of land at the intersection of Montgomery Street and the frontage road for I-30.

FORT WORTH, Texas — If you’ve driven past it, you recognize it—the large sign stretched across a sprawling old warehouse.

For more than 30 years, Montgomery Street Antique Mall has drawn people from Fort Worth and beyond.

On Tuesday, Fort Worth city leaders cleared the way for a new development project to take its place.

City leaders approved a zoning case that will allow developer Phoenix Property Company to build a hotel and mixed-use development on the site of the Montgomery Street Antique Mall.

In a unanimous vote, the city council cleared the way for two industrial plots of land at the intersection of Montgomery Street and the frontage road for I-30, West Freeway, just south of Dickies Arena.

The development project will include a 12-story hotel, restaurants, and a multi-family residential building with a maximum of 275 units, according to city documents.

“We’re really excited about this project,” District 7 Councilmember Macy Hill said during Tuesday’s vote.

Those who have frequented the antique mall and browsed through more than 60,000 square feet of antiques and collectibles said they’re sad to see it go.

Cleburne resident Irene Gillan, who often visits the mall with her daughter and granddaughter, was surprised to learn about its upcoming closure.

“I think it’s heartbreaking. I hope the vendors will relocate to some other place,” Gillan said. These things will never be recreated or made the way they were back then. It just won’t be the same.”

Gillan, a grandmother, said she grew up with many of the items in the antique mall. As the three generations of women browsed through old treasures, it was a trip down memory lane. Their weekly visits to the antique mall are a form of bonding.

“It makes me glad that I was born in the era that I was because I can appreciate a lot of this stuff,” Gillan said.

The owners of Montgomery Antique Mall didn’t respond to WFAA’s request for comment, and they haven’t provided a closure date.
