GEORGETOWN, Texas (KXAN) – A Georgetown Independent School District high school is one of only 29 schools across the nation to get the rights to perform Harry Potter and the Cursed Child , outside of Broadway. The district announced Monday it would put the play on this fall at East View High School.
The school won the licensing rights after winning the “Wands at the Ready” contest. It asked schools across the country to make the case why their school is the most “magical” place to perform the play. Georgetown ISD told KXAN students brainstormed to come up with ideas how to prove that, eventually creating a one minute commercial that parodied “Now That’s What I Call Music” titled “Now that’s Magical.”
The contest required students to post a short video on social media, among other steps. Contest rules described “magical” as demonstrating how their school or drama program shows a passion for commitment to the arts, student inclusion and diversity and ways they play to promote the production within their communities.
The play picks up 19 years from where J.K. Rowling’s last novel left off. It portrays Potter and his friends as grown-ups.
“We are over the moon to tell this important story of a young man finding his place in the world and his family, and I can’t think of a better group of students to share this experience with,” said East View Theater Director Jon DeMitchell.
