UPDATE: Students, teachers and staff are back at work for their first day of school in Uvalde, following the horrific mass shooting that occurred at Robb Elementary on May 24.
Parents in vehicles began lining up their children for drop-off around 7 a.m. and saw regular Texas Department of Public Safety troopers patrolling the campuses.
Teachers and staff were outside to greet the students, many giving high-fives, as students appeared eager to get started.
This is an unprecedented back-to-school season for UCISD. Authorities have promised to beef up security and crews have erected additional fences around campuses. Still, some parents have switched their children to private or online education.
The district will also be without 19 students and two teachers, who tragically died in the May 24 shooting. They will also be without Robb Elementary School, the site of the shooting that has since closed permanently.
Tuesday marks a new chapter for Uvalde, and KSAT is there for the healing process. Anchor Mark Austin and reporter Sarah Acosta have been in Uvalde all morning long, and will provide an update for the noon newscast.
