GRANBURY, Texas — A Granbury Independent School District student died Monday after he was hit and killed by a school bus, officials said.

The 5-year-old boy attended Emma Roberson Early Learning Academy, Granbury ISD said in a social media post. The Texas Department of Public Safety later confirmed the child was hit by a Granbury ISD school bus before he died from his injuries in a hospital.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of one of our students. Please join me in keeping the family and our schools in your thoughts and prayers during this devastating time,” the district said in a statement.

Texas DPS found that the incident occurred around 6:04 a.m. Monday while the bus was traveling northeast on Pecos River Drive. The bus stopped to pick up students near Brazos River Drive and as the vehicle was pulling away, the victim ran up along the driver’s side and in front of the bus, Texas DPS said in a press release.

The child was hit and transported to a hospital where he died, officials said. Eight other children and the driver were on the bus at the time of the crash. No other students, nor the 66-year-old bus driver, were injured in the crash, the district said.

The district has reached the families of all the students who were on the bus at the time of the incident, the district said.

The district did not immediately release any additional information on the student killed. Texas DPS is investigating the incident.

Chaplains, school counselors and staff will be available to speak with students in the coming weeks, the district said.

“I know you share in the devastation of this loss and may have many questions,” the district said. “We all have the expectation that students will be safe on our buses and in our district. We are already working to fully understand the situation and will share more information after we have had the time to investigate the incident.”
