Grocer nears ground-breaking on three stores in North Texas

Tom Thumb is readying shovels for three stores in North Texas.

The grocer will hold ground-breaking events Wednesday on sites set to open between the fall of 2025 and the spring of 2026, according to a statement. The new locales, which are separated by dozens of miles in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, include Sanger, Midlothian and Sunnyvale.

Tom Thumb, part of the Albertsons Cos., is investing locally as grocery businesses push to open sites to serve the expanding population that’s pushing out the edges of the metropolitan area. In 2024, it’s opened sites in cities such as Frisco and Forney.

“We are thrilled to be breaking ground in three communities on the same day for the first time in our 76-year history,” Wes Jackson, Tom Thumb president, said in a statement. “North Texas is experiencing tremendous growth and Tom Thumb, D-FWs grocer since 1948, is committed to growing along with it.”

The rollout of new stores comes as parent Albertsons pursues a $25 billion merger with Kroger, which also has invested in the Dallas area, including a recent store in Melissa. The corporate tie-up, which could result in more than two dozen stores being sold off , has come under come regulatory scrutiny with a lawsuit from the Federal Trade Commission to block the merger.

Sanger

Tom Thumb is set to open its site in the fall of 2025 in Sanger. It’s a building of over 50,000 square feet that will include a bakery, floral and deli areas. It also will feature an in-store Starbucks coffee kiosk and a pharmacy with a drive-through.

The store, which will anchor a new development, will be at 1431 W. Chapman Drive. Sanger is located to the north of Denton.

Sunnyvale

The new store in Sunnyvale is set to open in the fall of 2025. It will cover 59,000 square feet and feature a Starbucks coffee kiosk as well.

The site, which also will include a pharmacy, is part of a development at 3400 N. Belt Line Road. Sunnyvale is on the eastern side of the region between Mesquite and Forney.

Midlothian

The new store in Midlothian is set to open during the spring of 2026. In addition to floral and bakery, it also will feature a Starbucks coffee kiosk and a pharmacy.

The 59,000-square-foot store is anchoring a development at the northeast corner of FM 1387 and North Walnut Grover Road. Midlothian is on the southern edge of the D-FW.
