Tom Thumb is readying shovels for three stores in North Texas.
The grocer will hold ground-breaking events Wednesday on sites set to open between the fall of 2025 and the spring of 2026, according to a statement. The new locales, which are separated by dozens of miles in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, include Sanger, Midlothian and Sunnyvale.
Tom Thumb, part of the Albertsons Cos., is investing locally as grocery businesses push to open sites to serve the expanding population that’s pushing out the edges of the metropolitan area. In 2024, it’s opened sites in cities such as Frisco and Forney.
“We are thrilled to be breaking ground in three communities on the same day for the first time in our 76-year history,” Wes Jackson, Tom Thumb president, said in a statement. “North Texas is experiencing tremendous growth and Tom Thumb, D-FWs grocer since 1948, is committed to growing along with it.”
The rollout of new stores comes as parent Albertsons pursues a $25 billion merger with Kroger, which also has invested in the Dallas area, including a recent store in Melissa. The corporate tie-up, which could result in more than two dozen stores being sold off , has come under come regulatory scrutiny with a lawsuit from the Federal Trade Commission to block the merger.
