TEXARKANA, Texas (KSLA) – The $45 million construction project has begun for a new business, engineering, and technology building at Texas A&M University in Texarkana.
On Thursday, May 30, a groundbreaking ceremony was held on the campus.
“Students and families and parents are telling us they want degrees that directly lead to high paying jobs here locally, and that is exactly what this building will help us do. It will help us recruit and retain a higher caliber of student,” Texas A&M University President Dr. Ross Alexander said.
He says the building is designed to support the growing demand for degrees in business and technology related fields. It will be located on the southwest side of the campus.
Funding for the new construction was provided by the Texas Legislature in 2021. Texas A&M leaders praise state Representative Gary VanDeaver for his work in obtaining the needed funding.
“These buildings aren’t really just about brick and mortar. They’re really about the future of the area and the people who will learn within the walls of this building you know I’m excited because while we build buildings, we really build futures of citizens in this area and that is very exciting,” VanDeaver said.
University leaders say they hope this project is completed in 2026. Over the past 10 years, the Texas A&M system has invested around $100 million on the Texarkana campus.
