The Fairview Town Council plans to discuss The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ proposed McKinney Texas Temple at Tuesday night’s meeting.
The Town Council will either approve or deny the church a conditional use permit to build their temple at the current proposed dimensions: a 44,000 square-foot building with an almost 174 foot spire. The church needs the permit because the lot for the proposed temple is in a residential area of town that has zoning restrictions of 35 feet.
Residents and non-residents were given the chance to get tickets for the meeting, but thousands of people are expected to wait outside Accasia’s Event Venue while it takes place. The meeting, which begins at 7:30 p.m., is also being livestreamed. It can be watched at https://ringcentr.al/4fhldjP.
Those who oppose and favor the temple are expected to speak at the meeting. Residents of Fairview and Allen who oppose the temple at the proposed dimensions say it’s too large and too tall for the town, but the church says it is protected by The Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act to build at the proposed dimensions.
The initial vote was supposed to take place at the June council meeting, but the decision was postponed until Tuesday’s meeting so the church could have time to revise their proposal. The town and the church had discussions about changes, but the two groups were unable to agree.
