SAN ANTONIO – An elderly couple is recovering after their home near downtown San Antonio caught fire, causing excessive damage, according to a family member.
The fire happened around 4 p.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of University Avenue.

The highest number of fire units that responded to the fire was fourteen.
A family member told KSAT that candles and a space heater caused the fire.
Garcia said his mother and stepfather live at the home. He added that he learned about the blaze when he received a call from someone that his childhood home was on fire.
Garcia said that his mother told him the fire started inside the home while they were asleep. They quickly exited the house without injuries, but the flames spread throughout the house and into the backyard.
At this time, the extent of damages to the house is unknown.
