House Ethics Committee investigating Texas Congressman Troy E. Nehls

WASHINGTON (KXAN) — Texas Congressman Troy E. Nehls is under investigation by the U.S. House Ethics Committee, according to a statement shared by the panel Tuesday.

The committee’s letter did not specify what it’s looking into now, adding it will make an announcement on the matter by May 10. The independent Office of Congressional Ethics flagged the issue for the panel to consider on Dec. 11 last year.

“The Committee notes that the mere fact of a referral or an extension, and the mandatory
disclosure of such an extension and the name of the subject of the matter, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the Committee,” Republican chairman Michael Guest of Mississippi and Democratic ranking member Susan Wild of Pennsylvania wrote in the letter.

A spokesperson for Nehls shared a statement Tuesday afternoon where he explained the investigation is connected to his campaign funds.

“I look forward to assisting the House Committee on Ethics inquiry into my campaign’s finances,” Nehls said. “My campaign has complied with every Federal Election Commission (FEC) law, and my books are open.”

Nehls, a Republican from Richmond, previously served as the Fort Bend County sheriff. He first won his seat in 2020 representing the 22nd Congressional District, which extends south of the Houston area to the coast.

Earlier this month, he ran unopposed in the Republican primary for his Congressional seat.

The ethics committee includes only one Texan among its 10 members — Democratic Rep. Veronica Escobar of El Paso.
