“If it wasn’t for my granddaughter who got out of bed to go downstairs for a cookie, they may not have made it out.”
GARLAND, Texas — For many people, the start of the new year is a fresh beginning. That means something different for one Garland woman and her daughter.
On December 28, Sarah Hafer and her daughter, Olivia, were on the second floor of their home when Olivia got out of bed to go to the downstairs kitchen.
“If it wasn’t for my granddaughter who got out of bed to go downstairs for a cookie, they may not have made it out,” Kristin Hafer, Sarah’s mother said.
Olivia was met with thick smoke. Hafer said she ran upstairs to get her mother. Their home was on fire.
Sarah and Olivia ran out of their house with nothing but their nightgowns on.
Within minutes, everything Sarah and Olivia owned was lost — including two cats and many fish.
On December 31, Hafer told WFAA Sarah spent the day looking for birth certificates, car titles, and anything that is salvageable.
Sarah’s family set up a GoFundMe for Sarah and Olivia, which you can find here.
On her GoFundMe page, the family wrote that all donations would be used by Sarah and Olivia to secure new housing and furniture.
