‘I couldn’t believe it.’ | Truck slams into River Oaks bakery, narrowly missing customers

Customers stood inside Compadres Bakery near Fort Worth when a pickup truck drove into the building.

RIVER OAKS, Texas — Plywood from floor to ceiling filled much of the business storefront at Compadres Bakery in River Oaks.

On Monday evening, a truck drove into the bakery while customers were inside. The pickup truck tore through walls, shattered windows and damaged the inside of the business that specializes in pan dulce, or sweet bread.

Surveillance video from the bakery located west of Fort Worth showed the moment the vehicle drove into the bakery while a customer stood at the register. The customer helped his 13-year-old daughter out of the area.

Brenda, who runs the bakery but didn’t want to be identified by last name, said a sturdy bread display served as a barrier and prevented the vehicle from hitting customers in the store.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Brenda said. “It would’ve been a tragedy if it weren’t for that display we had there.”

According to River Oaks police, the 74-year-old driver accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal. The driver will not face any criminal charges.

The bakery, which recently celebrated its one year anniversary since its grand opening, has remained closed since Monday. The owners said they hope to reopen soon.

“It’s really sad, the fact that we have to start again,” Brenda said.

According to Brenda, the driver didn’t have insurance, and the business’s insurance won’t cover the damage. The business will have to pay for repairs out of pocket.

“It was really devastating because we worked so hard to open this place,” Brenda said. “We are still thankful it’s only damage to the business and not somebody’s life.”
