Inmate dies after attempted suicide in Tarrant County Jail, officials say

 

A 36-year-old man died in the custody of the Tarrant County Jail, officials said.

FORT WORTH, Texas — A man died while in custody of the Tarrant County Jail due to complications from an attempted suicide, the department said in a press release. 

A man was booked into the Tarrant County Jail on Feb. 4 after he was arrested for a parole violation in Palo Pinto County for multiple sexual assault convictions and failing to register as a sex offender, the release states. When he was booked into jail, the man was screened for suicide and impairments, officials said. He was referred to Tarrant County MHMR, which provides mental health services for the jail, for further assessment, the release states. 

He was later cleared by MHMR and assigned housing, the release states. On Feb. 6 the man was screened again by a mental health provider and he did not display suicidal ideation and remained in general housing, the release states. 

The 36-year-old man was found Feb. 6 unresponsive in his cell by his cellmate, the release states. Detention officers began administering life-saving treatment and the man was transported to a hospital where he died a couple of days later, officials said. 

The incident will be investigated by the Texas Rangers, the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies, the release states. In 2024, detention officers prevented 390 suicide attempts, officials said.
