An international clothing retailer is making its way to North Texas as part of its plan to expand across the United States.
Dublin-based Primark announced on Nov. 26 that it plans to open a store at Grapevine Mills Mall. The company is focusing its expansion in the South and Midwest. It’s also leased space at Castleton Square Mall in Indianapolis, Dolphin Mall in Miami, Gurnee Mills in Chicago and Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit.
An opening date for these stores has not been set, but some of them could open in 2025, a Primark representative said.
Another Primark store is set to open Dec. 12 at La Plaza Mall in McAllen, near the southern border, which will be its first location in the state. Other locations announced for Texas include Hurst, El Paso and two in the Houston area. In total, Primark has 29 stores in the U.S., including in New York City, Philadelphia and Chicago.
Grapevine Mills, which opened in October 1997, has become something of an entertainment and tourism destination, especially for families with children. It boasts a Peppa Pig theme park, an aquarium and a Legoland Discovery Center. In 2023, the immersive art experience Meow Wolf also made its Texas debut at the indoor mall that’s owned by Indiana-based Simon Property Group, the nation’s largest mall owner and a significant force in North Texas retail.
Western wear and accessories shop Cavender’s Boot City recently opened at the 1.8 million-square-foot mall, which is home to roughly 200 retailers.
In addition to men’s, women’s and kids’ clothing, Primark also sells home decor and furnishing as well as beauty products.
Known for its affordable prices that cater to a large customer base, Primark opened its first U.S. store in 2015 in Boston. The retailer first got its start in Dublin, Ireland under the name Penneys in 1969. It currently operates about 191 stores in the United Kingdom, its largest market.
In 2024, Primark reached a significant threshold and exceeded 1 million square feet of retail selling space in the United States. It launched its first ad campaign in the country in partnership with creative agency VCCP US and opened a distribution center in Jacksonville, Florida.
In total, the retailer has invested more than $90 million in the U.S. — a sign of its growing focus on this part of the world.
“Primark is still relatively unknown in the U.S., so we want to spread the word to savvy shoppers that they don’t need to sacrifice style if they’re on a budget,” Michelle McEttrick, Primark’s global chief customer officer, said in an August statement.
Kevin Tulip, president of Primark US, said shoppers in America are seeking value in fashion.
“Our ongoing expansion across the country represents our commitment to bringing Primark’s unique combination of quality products at affordable prices to as many American shoppers as possible,” he said in a statement.
News of Primark coming to Grapevine comes as other international retailers have made their way to North Texas. Japanese clothing store Uniqlo recently opened at the Galleria Dallas, Stonebriar Centre in Frisco and the Parks Mall at Arlington.
