It Was Like Holding Huge Party With Moving Toasts and Magnificent Oratory—for the Spouse You’re Divorcing

That was one of the strangest things I’ve ever witnessed. The Democrat National Convention on Monday night was a rousing, even moving tribute (if you’re a Democrat) to the commander-in-chief—frequently interrupted by chants of “Thanks Joe!”—followed by heartfelt tales from President Joe Biden’s wife Jill, his daughter Ashley, and many more Democrat fans.

It seemed like a coronation, and it ended with a speech by the president, which while overly long and full of his usual lies, was far better than his usual nonsensical output. In fact, if this had been the Joe Biden who showed up at the debate in June and in numerous other disastrous appearances, I think this version of Joe wouldn’t have been shoved aside in a Democrat “coup.”

And yet… bizarrely enough, this was his swan song, his goodbye, and even then the powers that be managed to shove him out of prime time and into the wee hours of the morning. It hardly seems an accident that most Americans were probably in their beds by the time he got the chance to take the podium. It hardly seems like an “oversight.”

It was an almost surreal scene—Biden supporters held hundreds if not thousands of signs saying, “Thanks Joe!” Former First Lady Hillary Clinton extolled his virtues, as did many others—even as they were kicking him to the curb in favor of Kamala Harris, who sat demurely smiling through his long, angry speech as if she was the cat who just swallowed the canary. There was one shot of CA Rep. Nancy Pelosi, who is widely considered to be the chief architect in bringing him down, chanting, “We love Joe!” We love Joe as long as we have a knife in our hands:

Although Biden yelled through much of his speech and called for unity even as he once again eviscerated those who don’t agree with him, I thought it was one of his better “performances.” The irony was thick in the air, however, as everyone in the hall knew that this was the end for him—the finale.

For a moment, I almost felt sorry for him; after all, they presented a Hallmark card vision of fatherhood, duty, and love of country—until I remembered just what he has inflicted upon this nation and how he has done everything in his power to divide us about racial issues, gender issues, a virtual cornucopia of divisive topics. This has not been a unifying leader, and although the prospect of a Harris administration might be far worse, I nevertheless say: don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
