A teddy bear, created using his grandfather’s favorite shirt, was stolen right from his doorstep.
DALLAS — What started as a heartfelt tribute to a Korean War veteran has become a painful loss for his grandson.
Alex Moffitt, who recently relocated to Dallas from Florida for work, lost an irreplaceable memento when a thief stole a package from his front door containing a custom teddy bear made from his late grandfather’s shirt.
“My grandfather was the purest human on Earth,” Moffitt said. “The time that we had with him was a miracle and a blessing to begin with.”
The stolen package contained a memorial teddy bear that Moffitt’s mother had specially ordered, crafted from his grandfather’s favorite shirt — the one he wore during his Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C., where he was celebrated for his military service. His grandfather, a combat veteran, passed away last year.
“That was such an intimate item,” Moffitt said. “It was losing a part of him.”
The theft has been particularly difficult for Moffitt, who is already struggling with being away from his family in Florida. “I’m already out here and I miss my family, now it’s like another piece of it’s gone, and it hurts,” he said.
Despite his loss, Moffitt is choosing to respond with the same grace his grandfather might have shown. “My grandfather was a very forgiving man, and I want to walk in his footsteps,” he said. “I want the opportunity to prove to him that I can be as forgiving.”
Moffitt hopes his story will make package thieves think twice about their actions. “You never know what you’re taking from someone,” he said. He has a simple message for whoever took the package: “Just bring it back.”
