LIVE: ERCOT power grid conditions, local outages as winter storm approaches

ERCOT’s CEO told WFAA there is plenty of power to meet the demands of Texans this week. We will track any power outages and grid conditions live here.

DALLAS — The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) issued a Weather Watch for Jan. 6 through Jan. 10, as a winter storm brought frigid temperatures and snow to Texas.

ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas told WFAA’s Jason Whitely that there is plenty of power to meet Texan’s demand this week.

“The power is not going to go out because we don’t have enough supply to meet demand for this week. We’ve got plenty of power for the demand and for the cold weather that’s coming. So, the grid’s gonna be running stably,” Pablo Vegas told WFAA on Tuesday afternoon.

However, ice could cause local utility outages, Vegas said. To get up-to-date information on local outages, Vegas urged Texans to visit puc.texas.gov to report outages.

If power outages are reported during the winter storm, we will add them to this live blog, along with when power is expected to be restored.

Still, winter weather inevitably brings back memories of the extended power outages that Texans faced in 2021. This year, electricity-generating plants are more prepared to operate in the extreme cold, Vegas said.

“Not only is this not Winter Storm Uri (2021), this is not Winter Storm Elliott (2022) or Winter Storm Heather (2024),” Texas Energy and Power Newsletter author Doug Lewin said. “I would put the changes of [rolling] outages below 10%. It’s not zero, but I just think they’re quite low.”
