DALLAS — The Longhorn Ballroom is kicking off its year-long 75th-anniversary celebration by showing off some recently unearthed images from the Sex Pistols’ 1978 show in Dallas.
The music venue, which has been around since 1950, is opening up its all-new “Punks & Pokes” exhibit on Feb. 1, so that all music fans and history buffs alike can celebrate and look back on some of the ballroom’s most iconic moments.
“Rock photographer Bob Gruen traveled with the Sex Pistols on their 1978 tour and captured their now-infamous Longhorn Ballroom show,” Longhorn Ballroom proprietor Edwin Cabaniss said in a press release. “We’re thrilled to showcase these never-before-seen photos of the legendary punk band as part of our permanent collection.”
The Longhorn Ballroom said the photos go hand-in-hand with the Sex Pistols release of three live recordings from their 1978 tour, including the show at the venue. According to the ballroom, these recordings will be released on March 28, featuring a 13-song set that opens with “God Save The Queen.”
To celebrate the opening of Punks & Pokes, the Longhorn Ballroom will host a concert on Feb. 1 featuring Bowling for Soup and Eleven Hundred Springs. The event, highlighting the pop-punk and country-rock talents of Texas, will benefit Café Momentum, South Dallas’s upcoming Southern Gateway Park, and the Music Health Alliance, which advocates for music industry healthcare and insurance.
