AUSTIN (KXAN) — The possibility of a few showers and thunderstorms will remain in the forecast through Tuesday. The Hill Country stands the best chance of seeing some rain, but rain totals are expected to be fairly light, although there could be some isolated totals around one inch. As a stationary front lingers across North Texas, and the heat dome weakens slightly, low rain chances will continue through Tuesday. As the heat dome strengthens once again, the second half of the week into the weekend will trend hotter and drier. We may see a pattern change around June 17th that could bring us showers from the Gulf each afternoon. Temperatures may lower a bit by then as well.
As the spring severe weather season begins to wind down, it’s time to look back at the extremely active season we’ve seen in Texas so far this year. The National Weather Service has been keeping a preliminary running tally of tornado, hail and severe wind reports for the nation since the beginning of the year.
For the first five months of this year, Texas has some impressive numbers!
Tornado Reports
- Total number of tornadoes through May: 118
- Average through May: 86
- Possible EF-2 or higher tornadoes: 3
- Tornado deaths for 2024: 8
- Average annual tornado deaths: 4
Severe Hail Reports (1” in diameter or greater)
- Total number of severe hail reports through May: 799
- 1”-1.24”: 293
- 1.25”-1.99”: 316
- 2” or larger: 190
Largest hailstone recorded in Texas: 6.416” in diameter at Hondo, TX in 2010. Note: A hailstone greater than 7” in diameter fell in Vigo Park, TX on June 2, 2024. The National Weather Service is confirming the size of the stone.
Severe Wind Reports (winds of 58 mph or greater)
- Severe wind: 711
- Wind damage: 420
- Gusts greater than 75 mph: 36
With the typically hot and dry summer months ahead, we will see severe weather chances dwindle, but hurricane season begins to ramp up in August. All indications are that it will be a busy one!
