Luka injury update: Here’s when the Dallas Mavs star is expected to come back

Doncic has been out with a calf strain since Christmas.

DALLAS — It’s been one month to the day since Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic strained his calf against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Christmas.

Sources told The Associated Press at the time that Doncic would be out at least a month before being re-evaluated. Well, that time has passed and NBA insider Marc Stein reported an update Saturday on Doncic’s timeline to return to the hardwood for Dallas.

Luka Doncic injury: When will he come back to the Dallas Mavs?

According to Stein, there is “optimism in Dallas about Doncic making his return to the Mavericks’ lineup before the All-Star break.”

The NBA All-Star Weekend is scheduled from Feb. 14 through Feb. 16, which would mean Doncic could return to the lineup within the next three weeks, per Stein’s reporting.

Since Doncic got injured, the Mavs have gone 5-10 and fallen to the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference standings with a 24-21 overall record.

Dallas has 11 games before the All-Star break, including Saturday night’s NBA Finals rematch against the Boston Celtics on WFAA. Seven of those 11 games are against teams with a .500 record or better, so the sooner Doncic is able to come back, the better.
