AUSTIN (KXAN) — A former Longhorn will lead the St. Dominic Savio Catholic football team into a new era.

Malcom Brown, a defensive tackle for the Longhorns from 2012-14 and Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots, will take over as head coach of the Eagles and lead them into TAPPS Division I, the highest division of private school 11-man football in Texas. He said in a press conference Friday that he’s “doing what he’s been called to do.”

“It’s a blessing to be here and have the opportunity,” Brown said. “Anything I can do for these young men, I’m here for them. This is my calling.”

The Eagles played an independent schedule last season with an 8-2 record, ending the year on a 5-game winning streak. Brown takes over for Rod Green.

Brown said he was in high school when he realized he wanted to coach after he was done playing, saying he had coaches make such a positive impact on his life growing up that he wanted to do the same for other kids.

“At every level I’ve played, there has been someone or multiple people who have made an impact on my life as a role model,” he said. “Once I had acquired all the knowledge I could, I knew I wanted to coach.”

Brown was a consensus All-American for the Longhorns in 2014 and was the 32nd overall draft pick by the Patriots in 2015.

“What impressed me the most during the interview process was getting to know Malcom as a dedicated family man and a person of deep faith, who is committed to supporting and helping our student-athletes be successful on and off the field,” said Evan Psencik, St. Dominic Savio Catholic principal. “We believe that Coach Brown will be the perfect leader, mentor, and role model for our student-athletes and will help our school community build a football program that will sustain success for many years to come.”
