ANGELINA COUNTY, Texas — A man in Angelina County is facing deportation after he was accused of assault with a deadly weapon.

Angelina County Sheriff’s Office said law enforcement officers responded to an assault in progress on April 10 in the 200 block of Roy Street. After knocking on the front door of the residence, Benjamin Munoz Ruiz, 56, opened the door holding a bloody metal crowbar with blood on the front of his shirt.

Ruiz dropped the crowbar upon deputy orders and was handcuffed by law enforcement.

Deputies found the victim lying in a bedroom unconscious with a large pool of blood around her head and a partially severed finger. Tovar had struck her in the face with the crowbar. Her trauma related injuries were believed to be life-threatening and she was transported by air ambulance to UT Health in Tyler for treatment.

Ruiz is held in Angelina County Jail and is charged with fist degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Evidence indicated Ruiz was in the United States unlawfully and is being held on an immigration detainer issued by immigration and customs enforcement.
