In a Facebook post update early Sunday morning, the Pasadena Police Department said a man in his 80s entered the school’s south doors, where a competition involving numerous schools was being held.

Two minutes later, the man fired a gun and struck a man in his 20s, police said.

A bystander tackled the shooter with the help from others to disarm him until officers arrived, police said.

The victim was hospitalized and is in stable condition, police said.

Pasadena Independent School District told KSAT’s sister station, KPRC, that the shooter was not connected to the competition.

In the update, police said a motive for the shooting is currently unknown.

“We are grateful for the brave citizens and the officers who were on the scene for security at the game and courageously stepped up to detain the shooter and prevent any further violence,” the department said.

In the post, the department said there will be an additional police presence at all PISD schools in the upcoming days and counselors will be available to students.

The investigation remains ongoing.
