SAN ANTONIO – Editor’s note: SAPD initially said Fernandez’s age is 26. However, an arrest affidavit lists Fernandez’s birth date and says he is 36.
A heated argument between two men at a Southwest Side home ended with one of them dead and another behind bars for murder, according to San Antonio police.
Police were initially called at 3:50 a.m., Saturday, to the 5500 block of Little Creek Drive for a shooting.
According to an arrest affidavit, someone drove by 36-year-old Joseph Fernandez’s home and fired a gun, striking him in the lower leg before leaving the scene.
Then just after 4 a.m., Fernandez and his brother drove to a home in the 5700 block of Middlefield Drive to confront the person he thought was firing the gunshots.
Fernandez accused a relative of 43-year-old Gilbert Lopez of shooting him in the leg on Little Creek, an affidavit states.
Police said Fernandez got into an argument with Lopez, pulled a handgun, and shot him in the chest.
Fernandez then got back into his vehicle and drove away.
When officers arrived at the home on Middlefield Drive, they found Lopez had died from his gunshot wound.
SAPD found Fernandez back at the crime scene at Little Creek. He was detained and taken to the hospital for treatment of his gunshot wound.
Fernandez was later released and taken to the Bexar County Jail for murder.
At last check, he remains in jail and his bond is set at $100,000.
This is a developing story and we’ll bring more updates as they become available.
