Man assaults Rockwall County deputy who was working unrelated arrest incident, officials say

 

A deputy was waiting on a wrecker in regards to an arrest when an unrelated vehicle “pulled up behind him,” the release said.

ROCKWALL COUNTY, Texas — A Rockwall County sheriff’s deputy was assaulted by a driver while responding to an unrelated arrest early Sunday, officials said.

The incident happened around 12:15 a.m. along Interstate 30 near T.L. Townsend Drive , according to a news release from the Rockwall County Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy was waiting on a wrecker in regards to an arrest when an unrelated vehicle “pulled up behind him,” the release said. 

A man got out of the vehicle and had a “brief interaction” with the deputy, before assaulting him, according to the release. 

The deputy called for help, and the suspect, 25-year-old Sam Lewis Barnhill, was arrested. Barnhill faces charges of assault on a peace officer and interference with officials duties, the release said.

The deputy, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital for treatment and was later released.
