DALLAS — A man died in the Dallas County Jail after he removed a medical device from his throat, officials said.

Around 8:52 p.m. Monday a 50-year-old man was brought to the Dallas County Jail by DART police, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. The man was initially rejected by the jail for medical reasons and taken to Parkland Hospital where he was later cleared to be booked into jail, the sheriff’s office said.

It’s unclear what medical condition prompted jailers to initially reject the man or what charges he was arrested for. A source said the medical device the man removed was a tracheostomy tube.

The man was found around 3:30 a.m. in the jail’s intake holding area tempering with the medical device in his throat, officials said. He was taken to Parkland Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Officials are investigating the incident, although it’s unclear what agency or unit.
