Man dies in rollover crash after high-speed chase in Victoria, Texas

VICTORIA, Texas — A 41-year-old man died Monday morning after a high-speed chase ended in a rollover crash, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported.

Authorities identified the driver as Joel Escobedo of Victoria. According to DPS, he was driving a 2008 Infiniti QX5 when troopers stopped him for reckless driving around 8 a.m. on J-2 Ranch Road, between FM 444 and U.S. 77 North.

A DPS trooper stated that Escobedo initially got out of the vehicle but then suddenly jumped back in and sped away, leading officers on a high-speed pursuit. The chase ended when Escobedo hit a bump in the road, lost control, crashed through a fence, and rolled multiple times in a pasture.

Officials said Escobedo was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The reason Escobedo fled remains unclear. DPS continues to investigate the incident.
