Man turns himself in, faces murder charge in shooting of Lincoln High student

A man is accused of fatally shooting a 17-year-old last week in South Dallas as the teen was lying down in a room with two children, according to court records.

Rashad Mayes, 22, turned himself in to authorities Thursday morning, records show, and he faces a murder charge in connection with the killing of Demaryae Dequan Hill-Young, a student at Lincoln High School. It is unclear whether Mayes has an attorney.

A witness told police that Mayes showed up to the home of his “on again off again” girlfriend in the early hours of Sept. 14, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit. A witness who appears to be the girlfriend in the document said Mayes believed she was seeing another man.

About 2:20 a.m., Mayes knocked on the front door of the home in the 2800 block of Burger Avenue, near South Malcolm X Boulevard, and was greeted by people inside, the document says.

He headed to the back room, where the girlfriend and Hill-Young were socializing with other juveniles. The affidavit says Hill-Young left the gathering and went to a bedroom, lying down on a mattress next to a 13-year-old boy, while a 7-year-old boy slept on the floor.

Mayes went into the bedroom about 2:30 a.m. and shot Hill-Young in the head, firing multiple times, the document says. The 13-year-old woke up to Mayes standing over him, threatening to kill him if he told anyone, according to the affidavit. The 7-year-old told police he woke up to the shots and saw Mayes standing at the edge of the bed.

A 15-year-old told police he went to find out what happened when Mayes approached him and said “Don’t snitch” and “Control your siblings” before leaving the home. Another teen, who is 16, found Hill-Young dead and called 911, the affidavit says.

Dallas police have said officers responded about five minutes after the shooting. Dallas Fire-Rescue responded, but Hill-Young died at the home.

The affidavit says a woman showed a detective an Instagram message she said Mayes sent about an hour before he arrived: “got me heated.”

Mayes remained jailed Friday afternoon, with bail set at $1 million, records show.
