SAN ANTONIO – A male driver and a female passenger were both hospitalized after a wrong-way rollover crash just south of downtown early Tuesday morning, according to San Antonio police.
The crash happened around 1:45 a.m. near the intersection of West Malone and Vignes Street, just east of Interstate 35.
According to police, the pair were traveling in an Infiniti at a high rate of speed and were going the wrong way when the driver lost control.
Police said the vehicle left the roadway and the driver over-corrected, rolling across two lanes and into a chain link fence and tree near an embankment, before finally throwing the driver.
The SUV landed partially in the backyard of a home, causing damage to a chicken coop, according to the homeowner.
The man was taken by ambulance to Brooke Army Medical Center, with possible life-threatening injuries. The female passenger had to be taken to a hospital for an allergic reaction. Neighbors say the woman had tried to run away, but officers found her hiding in an ant bed. The ants, however, got to her, triggering the allergic reaction.
Firefighters have since worked with a tow truck driver to pull the SUV out of the area. They did have to cut down part of a tree. The woman who lives at the home said that while her chicken coop was damaged, all her chickens appeared to be OK.
The San Antonio Police Department, the San Antonio Fire Department and EMS all responded to the call.
SAPD did not say what, if any charges are expected to be filed. The ages of the two people involved were not disclosed.
