Medal of Honor Museum marks 4th of July with family-friendly celebration

ARLINGTON, Texas — This 4th of July is the first for the Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington.

Starting Friday morning, the museum opened its doors for visitors to enjoy kids’ activities, live entertainment, and a moment to reflect on our nation’s independence.

Chris Cassidy, President of the Medal of Honor Museum, says this event was years in the making and, “July 4th is an amazing day to celebrate the heroes at the Medal of Honor museum.”

“It means everything. This is where it all began and we who have served in the military, we believe we must keep that memory alive,” reflecting, “Sometimes you can get a little emotional,” said Retired Air Force Colonel John Shepherd.

While Colonel Shepherd served more than 28 years in the Air Force, there were also budding members of Air Force ROTC from UNT walking through the museum, like  Jazmin Mendonca, who said, “They did so much for our country, and we’re also trying to serve our country. So I have a lot of respect for them.”

Aidan Sanders feels, “Honestly, the 4th of July just kind of represents everything we’ve done as Americans. Showcases everything we’ve gone through and everything we will go through in the future.”

On Independence Day, Shepherd believes we should all think about, “Our family, but our country should be on our mind. The United States is the biggest experiment in how to do things right as a nation that the world has ever seen, and we have to always be on guard that we don’t lose that,” sharing, “I’m just proud to be part of the great American dream.”
