SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) – Early voting for the May Primary Runoff Election is underway in Texas, and on the ballot is the local state senate seat.
After the March Republican Primary Election, it is between Brent Hagenbuch of Denton and Jace Yarbrough of Sanger for Texas Senate District 30.
Hagenbuch captured a few more votes than Yarbrough but because neither candidate won a majority of votes they face each other in the runoff.
Hagenbuch is a Navy Veteran and has served as the Denton County Republican Chair.
If elected, he wants to fund the police and address issues at the border.
“I would vote for anything and everything it takes to secure the border, finishing the wall, barriers, manpower, technology,” Hagenbuch said.
He supports school choice but wants to ensure public schools are funded too.
“I think families, parents should be able to have a choice in where they send their children to school,“ Hagenbuch said, “I believe we need to fully fund public schools at the same time and not look like we’re neglecting those as we offer school choice to parents.”
He wants to help the district continue growing positively. In Grayson County specifically, he wants to prevent the proposed Blackmountain Dorchest Cement Kiln.
“We have the chip plant coming in, things we have to prepare for the future,” Hagenbuch said, “Making sure this cement plant doesn’t happen frankly is important to me.”
Yarbrough is an Air Force Veteran and an attorney.
If elected, his first order of business is securing the Texas border.
“We need to make sure that Texas is the last place that somebody who entered our country illegally wants to come,” Yarbrough said, “That means ending in-state magnets like in-state tuition rates for those who can’t prove residency, it means banning foreign adversaries and their agents from owning our lands.”
As a home-school parent, he is an advocate for school choice.
“I’ve long been a proponent of parental empowerment education,” Yarbrough said, “My wife and I, with some close family and friends founded a classical Christian academy.”
Locally, he said property taxes are an issue, and wants to keep them low.
“Property taxes are a huge issue for folks in Grayson and Cooke County because of the explosion in growth and skyrocketing property taxes,” Yarbrough said, “We cannot continue to risk people losing homes and land that they’ve been on sometimes for generations.”
The winner of the runoff race will be the Republican nominee for the November General Election. They will then face the winner of the Democratic runoff race between Michael Braxton and Dale Frey.
The winner of the November Election will then be the next Texas Senator for District 30.
Early voting runs through Friday, May 24 with Election Day next Tuesday, May 28.
