BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – A Texas A&M Rodeo star has been in the hospital for four days after she and her horse took a big fall last Friday.
Within a second, Madison Outhier’s life flashed before her eyes.
“It was just like within an instant longer,” Outhier said. “I was on the ground, and she was on top of me.”
The breakaway roper took a dive with her horse, Eva, last Friday at the Days of ‘47 Rodeo in Salt Lake City, Utah.
“She just basically slipped and fell over backwards onto me and just smushed me underneath her,” Outhier said. “Between her and the asphalt.”
Outhier was rushed to the ICU with seven broken ribs, a broken collarbone, a lacerated liver, and a punctured and collapsed lung.
“The second she got off me, I was just flooded with the worst pain I’ve ever felt,” Outhier said.
Outhier’s best friend and teammate, Madalyn Richards, was shocked to find out what had happened.
“I was in the arena roping when that happened, so I didn’t know until after, and then we went to the hospital after that and saw her,” Richards said.
Richard says Outhier has been making a name for herself and was just getting started.
“She won the American the first year there was a breakaway, which was in 2016 or something like that,” Richards said. “And since then, she’s gone on to win the Rookie of the Year in the WPRA, which is a very big deal.”
Madison is currently recovering at the Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. She plans to get back on the horse as soon as she’s fully healed.
Doctors say they expect it will take 8 to 12 weeks to recover.
