The chase unfolded while detectives were conducting a narcotics investigation on the South Side. Police said Leo Pinero, 19, the subject of the investigation, fled the scene in a vehicle.

Despite attempts by marked police units to pull Pinero over in the 900 block of Pyron Avenue, Pinero did not stop and drove away at a high rate of speed, according to SAPD.

The department’s Eagle helicopter monitored Pinero’s vehicle as he traveled toward Pleasanton Road. Pinero then lost control, crashing into a guardrail and hitting Duke, who was on a nearby sidewalk.

Pinero attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by officers, according to police.

The medical examiner ruled Duke’s manner of death an accident.

Pinero faces charges of murder and evading arrest. The case remains under investigation.
