Mom’s Assemble is a grassroots effort to make community safer

SAN ANTONIO – Ashley Chavez started Mom’s Assemble in the fall. She lives in the Cassiano Apartments and felt her community lacked support for families in many areas.

“I felt there was nobody, there’s nothing I can go to that if I needed help with here and this community. So I was like, you know what? Let me go ahead and start this. Let me do this,” she said.

She hosts monthly meetings with moms to tell them about resources and to provide emotional support to one another. She said all moms want a safe place for their children.

“I have kids here in this community. These are my children. This is their community. And that, that’s just what keeps me up and going with it,” she said about her motivation with Mom’s Assemble.

She said it’s not enough for police to do the work of keeping safe. The community, she said, needs to do that too.

“Just come out in your local park, your neighborhood, and just like, hey, let’s get together,” she said.

Their next meeting is on February 16 at St. Timothy’s Parish Hall, from 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

The first meeting will take place Monday, February 13th at the San Antonio Food Bank, from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., located at 5200 Old Highway 90 W.

The next meeting is Thursday, February 16th from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Second Baptist Church, at 3310 E Commerce.
