DALLAS — A driver is accused of getting into a fight after a crash, stabbing a bystander and stealing cars and hitting other drivers during morning rush hour on Interstate 635 in Northeast Dallas, police said.
The incident sent three victims to the hospital and set off a major traffic blockage along one of the busiest stretches of highway in North Texas.
All of the westbound main lanes of the highway, and the two shoulder lanes, were blocked at Forest Lane, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
The crash was reported at 7:15 a.m. The highway lanes were cleared around 11:30 a.m.
Police said a suspect who was involved in the crash started fighting one of the other drivers. Another driver intervened and tried to stop the fight but was stabbed by the suspect, according to police.
Around the same time, a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) employee saw the crash and stopped to assist. The suspect then got into the TxDOT employee’s vehicle, hit the employee and crashed, police said.
Another driver saw the TxDOT employee get hit and stopped to help. That’s when the suspect then entered that driver’s vehicle and hit the driver, police said.
When the suspect got out of the vehicle, several bystanders were able to hold him down until police arrived, officials said.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was arrested.
Dallas Fire-Rescue crews took three victims to the hospital. The driver stabbed by the suspect was in critical condition, police said. The other two victims were listed as stable, but more information about their conditions was not available.
Several cars appeared to be damaged in the crash, which was causing heavy traffic backups along 635, according to footage from the scene.
