SAN ANTONIO – The North East Independent School District trustees voted Monday to consolidate three of its campuses in an effort to combat declining enrollment.
In December 2024, the district said it was looking at Wilshire Elementary, Clear Spring Elementary and Driscoll Middle School for consolidation.
On Monday night, some board members signaled a motion to delay the decision to April 2025; however, it was denied with a 5-2 vote, despite students and parents urging to vote against consolidating and for the delay.
After a brief discussion, the board proceeded with the consolidation process with a 7-0 vote.
Students at the affected schools will be sent to other schools across the district.
-
Driscoll students will move to Garner and Harris
-
Wilshire students will move to Northwood and East Terrell Hills
-
Clear Spring students will move to El Dorado, Serna and Royal Ridge.
At the time, the district told the board of trustees that enrollment was down 17% over the last decade despite increasing expenses due to inflation.
The district also cited an aging population as a factor for the decreased enrollment numbers.
NEISD held meetings in January at each school to discuss the consolidation plans.
Over the last ten years, NEISD enrollment numbers at the three schools showed the following:
-
Wilshire Elementary has seen a 43% drop
-
Clear Spring Elementary has seen a 27% decline
-
Driscoll Middle School saw a drop of 41%
