SAN ANTONIO – The newly elected South San Antonio Independent School District board convened for its first meeting on Wednesday night, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the district.
Dr. Saul Hinojosa, the newly appointed superintendent, introduced himself early in the meeting.
Hinojosa has over 30 years of experience in public education, all of which have been in south Bexar County. Before his current role, he served as the superintendent of Somerset ISD for 15 years.
Hinojosa outlined his vision for the district, emphasizing restructuring the central office and reallocating funds to prioritize school resources.
“The best-performing teachers will be the highest-paid teachers in Bexar County,” he stated, highlighting his commitment to rewarding excellence in education.
In his first six days on the job, Hinojosa visited every campus and engaged with the community through various activities affiliated with the district.
Hinojosa’s goal is to elevate South San ISD to an A-rated district.
Adriana Rocha Garcia, a San Antonio City Council member, expressed her enthusiasm for the district’s future during the meeting.
During the public comment section, a community member voiced concerns about the Texas Education Agency’s superintendent selection and highlighted areas where he believed the district had fallen behind in the past, particularly in budget management and student passing rates.
In addition to the superintendent’s introduction, the board elected new officers.
Raymond Tijerina was chosen as the board president, Karla Sanchez as vice president and Darrell Balderrama as board secretary.
