New video released in Fort Worth police standoff

Police released video Thursday after a man fired shots at Lake Worth police, led them on a chase and barricaded himself in a Fort Worth home.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Police on Thursday released new dashcam and body cam video from the fatal shooting of a man after they say he fired at officers during a chase and standoff at a Fort Worth home last week.

The videos shows the man, later identified as Nicholas Sides, 36, speeding away in a red pickup truck after Lake Worth officers tried to conduct a traffic stop shortly before 4:30 p.m. Jan. 30, leading police on a chase.

The video also shows the pickup truck crashing into a backyard in what police say was 5200 block of Buchanan Street in Sansom Park.

“Not too long after his vehicle came to rest, he exited and shot at our officers five times,” said Lake Worth Police Chief J.T. Manoushagian.

He said one of the rounds hit the hood of a patrol car.

The video shows officers attempting to negotiate with Sides and giving him commands.

Police say Sides ignored their commands, got back into the vehicle with his gun pointed to his head and drove past officers.

A second chase began, ending at a home in the 1700 block of Skyline Drive in Fort Worth, where Sides ran inside and barricaded himself in, leading to an hours-long standoff, according to police.

The Fort Worth Police Crisis Intervention Team and SWAT were called to the scene and set up a perimeter around the house, officials say.

In the video, officers can be heard negotiating with Sides and giving commands to “put the gun down.”

At some point, Sides set off fireworks inside and outside the home, according to police.

Sides eventually left the house with a gun to his head, refused to follow police commands, officials say. Fort Worth SWAT hit him with 40mm less-lethal rounds, and Sides fired multiple shots at officers, at which point an officer from Fort Worth SWAT shot Sides in the torso, police say.

Sides was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead, officials say. No others were hurt.

According to a press release two Fort Worth officers were placed on standard significant event leave and have since returned to work.

The Lake Worth officers involved were placed in a “standard critical incident debrief and have since returned to work,” according to the press release.

The FWPD Major Case Unit, Internal Affairs, and the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident.

“All of last year 2024 we had four officer-involved shootings. This year 2025 we’ve started with four officer-involved shootings in January alone,” outgoing Police Chief Neil Noakes said. “The violence directed toward our officers obviously is extremely concerning and our hopes and prayers are that this is an outlier. That January was a fluke, that we won’t see this for the rest of the year.”
