AUSTIN (KXAN) — No. 12 Texas ran its record to 13-1 with a sweep of Santa Clara, capped by a 6-1 win Sunday at UFCU-Disch Falk Field.
The Longhorns beat the Broncos 4-2 in the series opener Friday and followed that with an 8-3 victory Saturday.
Dylan Volantis picked up his second pitching win of the season in his first collegiate start Sunday. The 6-foot-6 freshman left-hander has been a bullpen arm thus far, but he pitched the first 5.1 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk. He threw 66 pitches, 42 for strikes, facing 19 batters. He struck out the side in the second inning and lowered his ERA to 1.80.
The Longhorns had eight hits and took advantage of seven walks by Santa Clara pitching. Texas shortstop Jalin Flores hit a solo home run in the second inning. Tommy Farmer IV hit a 2-run single in the sixth and Ethan Mendoza did the same in the eighth.
After losing the season opener to Louisville in 10 innings, the Longhorns have won 13 consecutive games.
On Friday, Casey Borba hit a solo home run and Flores smacked a 2-run double. On Saturday, Texas collected 10 hits and Mendoza went 3-for-5. Borba hit a 3-run double in the fourth inning and Flores hit two doubles.
Texas (13-1) plays UT Arlington on Tuesday to end a 5-game homestand before hitting the road for Starkville, Mississippi, to take on Mississippi State in their first-ever Southeastern Conference series.
