No. 2 Texas in position for SEC regular season title

AUSTIN (KXAN) — There’s a lot to be said about Texas’ recent stretch of games in the Southeastern Conference. Winning four consecutive games against top 25 teams makes for an impressive resume.

In February, the Longhorns have made a name for themselves as one of the best teams in the country.

“If anybody else has done what we’ve done, the resume, I’m all ears,” head coach Vic Schaefer said.

Since Feb. 6, the Longhorns have beaten No. 24 Vanderbilt 87-66, No. 2 South Carolina 66-62, No. 8 Kentucky 67-49, and No. 3 LSU 65-58.

“We’re in a position to win a (regular season) championship. That’s what these kids in my mind need to understand,” Schaefer added.

The gauntlet of ranked teams are out of the way, but it’s still a tough conference. Before switching gears to the SEC tournament, the Longhorns play at Georgia, at Mississippi State, and host Florida to cap off the regular season.

Sitting at 12-1 in the Southeastern Conference, if the Horns were to win the remainder of their games, they could share the regular season title with No. 6 South Carolina, if the Gamecocks beat Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, and Kentucky.

“I’ve been in this position before. I’ve come out on both sides. It is a hard grind these last three and two of them are on the road,” Schaefer mentioned.

In the latest women’s bracket projection by ESPN’s Charlie Creme, the Longhorns are the No. 1 seed, playing in the Birmingham Regional. Creme also thinks Texas will win the SEC tournament, making them an automatic qualifier.

“I’m proud of them for that, but they know, we haven’t done anything yet,” Schaefer said.
