AUSTIN (KXAN) — No. 7 Texas poured it on in the third quarter to run away from TCU 65-43 on Saturday in Big 12 women’s basketball action at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth.
Leading 23-20 at the half, the Longhorns outscored the Horned Frogs 26-12 in the third frame to put the game away. TCU made four field goals in the quarter while Texas shot 83% from the field, connecting on 10 of 12 attempts. The Longhorns capped the big second half with a 16-11 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter.
Texas senior guard Shay Holle scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half, shooting 3 for 4 from the field including 2 for 3 from 3-point range. She also made all four of her foul shots and dished out three assists in the half. Madison Booker and Aaliyah Moore each scored nine points in the second half to help the Longhorns pull away. Booker ended the game with 13 points in 26 minutes while Moore did all of her scoring in the second half after playing just five minutes in the first half.
The Longhorns forced 19 turnovers and scored 20 points off of them. While they committed nine turnovers themselves, the Longhorns limited the damage by allowing just six points off the miscues. Texas also held a 19-8 advantage in bench points, led by DeYona Gaston’s nine.
TCU made more than half of their field goals from 3-point range. They shot 14 for 48 overall and 8 for 29 from long distance but didn’t make a shot in the final 3:21. Texas shot 47% from the field, 27 for 58, on 57 possessions. The Longhorns scored on 54% of their possessions and outrebounded TCU 36-31.
Texas (22-3, 9-3 Big 12) is now tied for third with West Virginia in the Big 12 standings. The Longhorns travel to Houston on Wednesday and return home to face Iowa State on Saturday. Tipoff for Wednesday’s game is set for 7 p.m.
