Tragically, Jan. 6 is not only the anniversary of the day Aquazia Kennedy died. It also marks the birth of her daughter Sky’Lynn who survived the crash.
DALLAS — On a bright and cold January afternoon, those who loved Aquazia Kennedy gathered outside Dallas Police Headquarters to pray and push for accountability.
“I pray that you put the right people in our path Lord, so we can understand what happened that night, Lord,” Her aunt, Davida Kennedy, pleaded.
Last year on Jan. 6, Aquazia Kennedy was 33 weeks pregnant riding in the backseat of a Chevrolet Malibu that stalled in the middle lane on I-30 at 2nd Avenue. That’s when the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office says an off-duty Dallas Police officer crashed his Jeep Wrangler into the back of the car, killing Aquazia.
While the 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital, her daughter Sky’Lynn survived. The baby girl celebrated her first birthday bundled up at Monday’s vigil for her mom.
“Heartbreaking for everybody involved, family, friends, the baby especially,” Davida shared.
Aquazia’s father, Quincy Kennedy, explained, “Well, she’s a big part of this. She was a victim, and she can’t speak.”
The Kennedy family emphasized they have not spoken to anyone at the sheriff’s office or District Attorney’s Office about the accident.
“Why haven’t anyone reached out to us and said, hey this is what happened. There’s a misunderstanding. No one has said anything to us,” Davida said.
The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office shared with WFAA that it has communicated with Aquazia’s family, who expressed a lack of contact from the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO). They added that they offered to receive any evidence or communication on the case and deliver it to the DCSO but never heard back from the family.
“Our continued condolences go out to Ms. Kennedy’s family on the anniversary of her death,” the DA’s Office said in a statement to WFAA.
Sky’Lynn is now receiving 24-hour nursing care, and still battling complications from the crash.
The Kennedy family is still praying to get answers about what happened that early morning one year ago.
