NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas — After nearly 40 years with the North Richland Hills Police Department, Chief Mike Young is ready to retire.
In a Monday news release, the department said Chief Young plans to retire at the beginning of 2025 after nearly 40 years as the leader of the North Richland Hills Police Department.
In 1985, Chief Young began his career with the NRH PD after serving four years in the U.S. Air Force. He rose through the ranks and became Sergeant in 1997, Lieutenant and Captain in 1999, and Assistant Chief in 2013.
During his time with the department, Chief Young has led every division and bureau of the agency. He received the department’s highest award, the Medal of Honor, in 1989.
“Chief Young has been an integral part of the success of the NRH Police Department, and his advocacy for officers on the front lines is one of his greatest strengths,” City Manager Paulette Hartman said. “Thank you, Chief Young, for your service to the citizens of North Richland Hills.”
Chief Young also holds a Master Peace Officer’s License, a Bachelor of Arts and Science degree from the University of North Texas, and a Master’s degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Texas at Arlington.
“In the short time I’ve had the privilege of knowing Chief Young, he has shown nothing but kindness, support, and professionalism. In our conversations, his genuine care and concern for the city and his officers were always evident. Chief Young has been a tremendous asset to our community for many years. He speaks highly of everyone, and it’s clear that sentiment is shared by all who know him. He will be greatly missed. Thank you for your dedicated service,” North Richland Hills Mayor Jack McCarty said in a statement.
The department said Chief Young will be honored at his retirement reception on January 29, 2025. The celebration is open to the community and will be held at 2 p.m. at the Grand Hall at the NRH Centre, 6000 Hawk Avenue.
