The shooting happened Wednesday, Jan. 22.
DALLAS — An 8-year-old Dallas boy is walking again after being shot while sleeping in his bed when dozens of bullets struck his family’s apartment, his mom told WFAA.
Third-grader Joseph was asleep in his bedroom when one of the multiple bullets penetrated his family’s apartment unit and struck his leg.
“It felt terrible. My leg hurt bad,” Joseph said.
His mother, Consuela, and godmother Alischa were home during the shooting. They said they heard numerous gunshots outside their apartment before realizing Joseph had been hit.
“I just want to know why. What was the reason?” Consuela said, fighting back tears as she recalled the incident.
The shooting has left lasting trauma on Joseph.
“He has bad nightmares, wakes up out of his sleep screaming ‘mama,'” Consuela said.
Despite their fears, the family had no choice but to return to their apartment.
“I was scared to come back, but this is our home,” she added.
The Dallas Police Department has not made any arrests in connection with the shooting. The family is pleading for anyone with information to come forward.
“We just want justice, that’s all,” Alischa said.
Meanwhile, Joseph focuses on recovery, hoping to return to school and “play with [his] sisters again one day.”
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Dallas Police Department.
