While a severe weather threat for North Texas passed without much rain Wednesday, the chance for stormy weather remains into overnight Thursday and the rest of the week.
The National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office initially warned Tuesday that Dallas-Fort Worth area could see scattered strong to severe storms move through the region Wednesday morning through the afternoon. However, Sarah Barnes, a meteorologist with the Weather Service, said a strong cap prevented severe storms from developing Wednesday.
Some rainfall began developing in Tarrant County around 7:20 a.m. and moved across Dallas-Fort Worth, according to KXAS-TV (NBC5)’s live weather radar. Barnes said most of the precipitation was light, with Dallas seeing about .07 to .08 inches of rain. She said most rain fell east of Dallas, with areas in Mesquite and Rockwall seeing between a quarter to a half-inch of rain.
Barnes said no severe storms or hail were reported in Dallas on Wednesday; However, she said storms are expected to develop along a warm front. Those storms are expected to begin at about 1 a.m. Thursday and last until 11 a.m., according to the weather service. Large hail and wind gusts over 60 mph are possible, with small risk for a tornado.
Later this week, the weather service said North Texas could face flood threat, with the highest risk being on Friday. It said isolated flooding could be an issue particularly for areas east of Interstate 35 and north of Interstate 20.
On Friday, rain chances are sitting around 90%, according to the forecast from KXAS-TV (NBC5), with heavy rain expected as well.
“Friday definitely looks like a messy day for the metroplex,” Barnes said.
Temperatures throughout the rest of the week are expected to be in the mid-to-high 70s with the exception of Wednesday, which will see a high of 84. Temperatures will be somewhat chilly this weekend, with highs in the 60s.
