North Texas detectives uncover, identify human remains in a backyard, suspect charged with murder

60-year-old Don Edward Bullard was already in custody in the Denton County Jail on unrelated charges.

DENTON, Texas — A man has been charged with murder after human remains were found in the backyard of a home in Denton.

Denton Police said the arrest marks the end of a five-year investigation into the whereabouts of 41-year-old Angelique Yvonne Hataway.

Don Edward Bullard, Jr., 60, has been charged with Hataway’s murder.

In April 2019, a family member reported Hataway missing to the police. During the investigation, detectives had learned that no family members had spoken with Hataway since January, Denton PD said in a news release.

Bullard shared a home with Hataway in the 500 block of N. Mayhill Road and was believed to be the last person to have seen her. He was questioned by police several times during the multi-year search for Hataway and consistently stated he did not know her whereabouts.

Then on Sept. 10, 2024, Denton PD was contacted about possible human remains buried behind Bullard’s home. The department executed a search warrant and recovered the human remains in the backyard. Hataway’s personal items were also recovered.

Hataway was positively identified on Dec. 17 after being compared against DNA samples from family members, the news release says.

Bullard was already in custody in the Denton County Jail on unrelated charges, when an arrest warrant was issued in connection with Hataway’s murder.

Bullard’s bond has not yet been set for the murder charge.
