North Texas elementary school evacuated after construction crew hits gas line, officials say

Officials are working to fix the gas leak on Harwood Road, Bedford ISD said.

BEDFORD, Texas — An elementary school in Bedford has been evacuated after a construction crew hit a nearby gas line, causing a leak, officials say.

The city of Bedford says the leak is in the area of Harwood Road, where the crew hit a four-inch gas line. Atmos arrived at about 11:27 a.m., and nearby structures are being evacuated, including Meadow Creek Elementary .

Bedford ISD said the elementary students are being taken to Harwood Junior High, and no parent action is needed at this time. The students are receiving lunch there. Parents who need to pick up their Meadow Creek student can do so at the Harwood Junior High gym, which is on the north end of the school.

In a statement, Atmos Energy said a construction crew unrelated to Atmos was working at the intersection when they damaged a natural gas pipeline.

Along with the school, the Bedford Fire Department evacuated a nearby apartment complex, Atmos said.

Atmos technicians are on scene making repairs, the company said, which may affect traffic delays in the area.
